Five years ago Yolanda Villalobos, a Hispanic missionary saw the plight of children in migrant camps. While their parents were working in the fields to earn money, the unattended children were left with little food and no activities or formal education. Sanitary facilities were non-existent.
The first year we had a shower to bathe the children in and what a treat it was for all of us. A group of Christians had completely tiled and put in an on demand water heater making it the most exciting new addition to the migrant camp.
We had just finished washing, shampooing and dressing 123 children and we sat down to take a break and marvel at the many ways God provides. Four twelve year old boys walked in who had just completed their 12 hour day in the tomato fields. They asked Yolanda if they could use the shower. She hugged and talked with them, and lovingly gave her permission. I searched for clean clothes.
When they were clean and dressed, their faces shone brightly and they were thinking they looked pretty handsome! Yolanda shouted “Ahh, gringos!” Surely they look like “beach kids!” But was that right?
They were boys of Chiapas. Asking Yolanda that very question, her response to us was quick and deep. She picked up the dirty, threadbare pants one of the boys had worn and showed us how many times they had been mended. “These are Chiapas pants for this boy. What you are doing is good, very good. It makes my heart go to heaven!” At that moment I knew I was exactly where God wanted me, doing exactly what was needed.
Stepping Forward:
· Rock a baby…we have 16 babies one year old and under
· Play anything with the children (ages 2- 11) (they love crafts).
· Assist the teacher with whatever he needs
· Help build the patio at our storage building, stock the donations, carry food to the 13 families we are working with in Testerazo (outside the camp).
Working with World Vision, El Roi now provides daycare for 100 children. There is a continual need for the following:
· diapers [all sizes]
· juices
· snacks
· formula [non-soy is best]
· liquid bath soap
· shampoos &conditioners
· toothpaste & toothbrushes
· basic first aid items
· other hygiene items
· bicycles of all sizes bring huge smiles to all!!
· Pray for the Spirit of God to move in the camp…it is really cool to walk the camp and the community praying for God’s will!
· Two or three times a month individuals and groups go and help in Testerazo. Some trips are daytrips and some overnight.
The camp is 30 miles south of Tecate in Testerazo, Baja-Mexico. A new local hotel is available for overnight trips.
