Who is my neighbor?” It was a smoke screen question asked by someone trying to wiggle off the hot seat. Jesus pressed in with a famous story about a Samaritan who stepped forward to help a guy who’d been mugged and left to die. It’s easy to walk right past the opportunities to serve that are close at hand in our own neighborhoods.
Has God gifted and impassioned you to help open our church’s eyes to our neighbors? How about joining a small team of “good Samaritans” who will link us with our neighbors in new and exciting ways? What dreams and hopes do our neighbors have to make our community a better place? How can we add our gifts and strengths to those in our neighborhood so that peace of God will come more fully? How can we partner with our neighbors and serve them and our community such that many neighbors will be drawn to the God of peace?
SBPC elder and enthusiast, Valarie Bass, has said YES to God’s call to head up the NeighborServe team. Our vision is to establish a close partnership with a couple entities in our community (maybe a public school, something with the elderly, etc) and then plan a Saturday in the winter/spring when we deploy 100 loving Christians to serve in various ways. We will probably partner with several other churches in north County who are hatching the same dream. It will be a day that will make a difference for Christ, right here in our neighborhood!
