Serving the poor and the homeless in San Diego

The Presbyterian Urban Ministries is fulfilling God’s commandment to feed the hungry, cloth the needy, and look after the poor.

This ministry seeks to answer Christ’s call to do justice in the world, especially to those who are poor or find themselves outside of mainstream society. We do this in two ways. One way is through mercy by extending God’s love to those who simply cannot help themselves. We do this by supplying basic life necessities such as food, clothing, hygiene items, and referral services. The other way is through empowerment. We empower people by helping them back to work by providing assistance for identification documents, transportation to job interviews new jobs, proper work attire and other employment referral resources.

One of our clients writes:

“A word of gratitude for all the assistance you’ve provided me. You were instrumental in my time of need and of importance in me succeeding in my job search. Thanks to your assistance in your clothing room, hygiene kits, bus tokens, and work clothes from Walmart, I am able to suit up and show up to my new job.”

Stepping Forward:

· Clothing room volunteers – sort and hang clothes in our clothing room.

· Front desk worker – answer phones and do client intake

· Case worker – work with clients needing our services

· Doorstep Ministry – Speak to clients about God and life on our front waiting area as they are waiting to be served. Ideal for people who like to evangelize.

· Clothing drives – Gather clothing within your group and/or neighborhood. We are always in need of men’s pants, shoes, socks and underwear.

· Midweek Bible Study – looking for people to assist with and prepare Bible studies for the homeless

The jobs at the facility require one morning or afternoon per week. Clothing drives can be done at your leisure and involve coming down to drop off collections. The midweek Bible study (not currently running but hopefully soon) would require one evening commitment.
