At 23 Connie left her seven children with her mother and came to the United States to support her family left in Guadalajara, Mexico. Now in her sixties Connie has obtained citizenship.

Connie has been a regular patient of the Medical Program being treated for high blood pressure. Dr. Wheelock was concerned about her heart condition and arranged for numerous complex tests. The tests showed an imminent fatal heart disease requiring an aortic valve replacement and triple bypass surgery. Surgery was performed at Scripps Memorial Hospital.

Connie is now in good health and continues to visit her children and grandchildren.

The St. James and St. Leo Medical and Dental Program provide comprehensive medical and dental services to the working poor who no health insurance and (except for emergencies) no way to obtain such services. All patients, especially children, are accepted regardless of race, color, creed, or origin. All patients with insurance, especially MediCal, are referred to doctors who will accept them. There is therefore no competition with medical and dental professionals or hospitals but rather a relief of caring for the working poor.

The medical and dental program is an all volunteer, interfaith personnel of doctors, dentists, nurse practioners, nurses, hygienists, dental assistants, health assistants, translators and administrators, all of the highest quality.
