Sudanese Fellowship

They fled their homes in the middle of the night with their children in their arms and the clothes on their backs. This community of Christians in southern Sudan was targeted by Muslim soldiers doing the dirty work of their government which has sided with the forces of radical Islam. Several hundred Christians walked days to reach the border of Ethiopia and settled in a refugee camp there. After many years of deprivation and prayer, these courageous Christians were granted asylum in the USA. As a community they landed in San Diego about 10 years ago. Many churches, including SBPC, reached out a hand and helped them get established. Together we built a small church facility where their pastor, Peter Lual, leads them in faithfulness to Christ.

They are full of hope and at the same time are full of concern. Their children are now as much American as they are Sudanese. This clash of cultures is very difficult for both older and younger. Our sisters and brothers are reaching out again. This time they don’t need help with a building but in helping their children and youth follow Christ as Americans. We have enjoyed having Sudanese children join us at Sports Jam. It has been a wonderful opportunity to get to know these fantastic children and their families.

Stepping Forward:

· Provide bible Study for the children, perhaps one Saturday a month.

· Tutoring teens in various subjects and providing mentoring as they make crucial decisions about their futures.

· English classes especially for the women. The men and children speak well, but the women are less fluent.

· Adopt a family – invite them to your home or to your family events.

The Sudanese Presbyterian Church is located in central San Diego between 52nd and Orange Avenue, about 30 min. from SBPC.
