Presbyterian Urban Ministries (PUM) is a Christ centered outreach, dedicated to helping those in need with a focus on a hand up rather than just hand outs.
Our guiding scripture is, "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me". (Matthew 25:40)
We are NOT a typical Outreach.
We are not a homeless shelter,
We are not a soup kitchen
We are not another thrift store.
San Diego recently ranked third in the nation for the size of its homeless population -- just over 10,000 county-wide -- outranked only by New York and Los Angeles according to a report just issued by the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development. Over the past three years, we at PUM have seen a steady increase in the number of people seeking assistance due in part to:
The increase in unemployment
The state's slashed budget and diminished funding for social services
The early release from prison program
The increase in the number of returning vets
The chart to the right reflects our growth in services to meet the needs.
Preliminary numbers indicate that we finished the year with an increase of gross income of 18% over 2014(which was 40% over 2011), we decreased expenses over 6% and we finished solidly in the black. Although church mission giving was down from previous years, individual donations were up. In-kind donations and designated gifts were at an all-time high. Our Stamp Out Hunger food drive in the spring netted 7 times the food donations than prior years and generous food donations by Rancho Bernardo and Rancho Santa Fe in conjunction with Souper Bowl Sunday helped keep our pantry stocked.
