San Diego Rescue Mission
Their Mission Statement
San Diego Rescue Mission exists to spread the good news of salvation through Christ by serving the needs of the poor, addicted, abused, and homeless, thus improving the quality of their lives.
We believe in the inherent worth of every homeless man, woman, and child, and provide rehabilitation and discipleship programs that lead to permanent change and independent living.
San Diego Rescue Mission offers a wide range of onsite programs and services. It is the only major homeless shelter in San Diego that does not receive government funding for its programs. It exists entirely on donations and profits from several thrift stores that they own and operate in the San Diego area. Today there are close to 400 residents enrolled in the long-term, 1 year program. The programs are gender specific helping them attain sobriety with counseling and learning life skills. On any given day there are 70-80 mothers and children safely sheltered with us.
113,880 meals. That's 136,656 pounds of food - over 68 tons! That's how much food hungry people will eat at the San Diego Rescue Mission this Thanksgiving season.
Story From a Recent Client
I came to the Mission in June of 2006 looking for a change. I didn't expect to receive the glorious miracle I did receive. God has blessed me with a newfound faith not only in Him but also in myself. He has shown me that I can make a difference and I do have a purpose. My job in the Clothing Room has given me the courage to once again believe in myself. My faith, while always strong, has been growing more and more as I come to realize the true and wonderful power of Jesus Christ. I owe more than words can say to the Mission and its staff. They have helped me and guided me through the troubled waters. Now, while it is not yet smooth sailing, the waters are calming and the wind is now down to a nice cool breeze. Not only the staff but also many of the residents have helped me grow with their love and friendship. I didn't think I would ever find the peace I now have. I am now attending a wonderful church that has taken me in as one of their own. Thank you San Diego Rescue Mission, may God bless you and keep you. -"Jeff", Men's Center Graduate, Class of Summer 2007
